What is FloXpress?

It is a tool that comes along with SOLIDWORKS CAD packages allowing the customers to perform fluid dynamic analysis through parts or assemblies and by the calculated velocity field, the problems in the model can be identified and improve them before manufacturing.

Using FloXpress:

This function can be accessed from Evaluate Tab from Command Manager. Once the user selects this function, a wizard will appear on the screen’s right side.

Step-1: Prepare the model for analysis

After saving the model, the FloXpress tool evaluates the geometry for any openings. The user must make sure that all the openings must be closed with a solid such as extruded parts for inlet and outlets.

Geometry for the analysis

Once the openings are closed, the user can see the fluid volume inside the model. For better visualization, it is advised to change the transparency of the model.

Fluid Volume

Step -2: Selection of Fluid

There two fluids to select for the calculation, Air and Water. Only one fluid can be used at a time.

Selection of Fluid

Step -3: Flow Inlet Condition

First select the inlet face of the model and there are three flow inlet conditions to choose from,

  • Pressure: Uses pressure as the flow metric. Set the value in the Environment Pressure box in Pascal. SOLIDWORKS FloXpress interprets this value as a total pressure for incoming flows and as a static pressure for outgoing flows. The same interpretation is applied if a vortex crosses the inlet or outlet.
  • Volume Flow Rate: Uses Volume Flow Rate as the flow metric. Set the value in m3/s.
  • Mass Flow Rate: Uses Mass Flow Rate as the flow metric. Set the value in kg/s.
  • Temperature: Set the temperature of the incoming fluid. It is necessary for all the inlet conditions.

Inlet Flow Condition

Step -4: Flow Outlet Condition

First select the outlet face of the model and there are three flow inlet conditions to choose from,

  • Temperature: Set the temperature of the incoming fluid. It is necessary for all the outlet conditions.

Note: If the Pressure opening is used for both inlet and outlet, the inlet pressure must be higher than the outlet pressure.

Outlet Flow Condition

Step -5: Solving the model

Once all conditions are setup, the next step is to solve the model. During this step, the analysis can be suspended or stop till the point and save the results. Once the problem is solved, the results can be seen in the results page.

Step -6: Viewing the Results

In this step, the velocity trajectories can be visualized and evaluated as per the requirements and if needed the changes can be done in the model and re-run the study. The report can also be generated for this analysis.

SOLIDWORKS FloXpress in SOLIDWORKS CAD packages is a first pass qualitative flow analysis tool which gives insight into water or air flow inside your CAD model. To get more quantitative results like pressure drop, flow rate, temperature etc you will have to use SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation.
